There are so many ways to love your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man. While we wait for the latest news on the upcoming “Spider-Man 4,” Sony Pictures is simultaneously developing “Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse,” the third installment in the successful animated film series that debuted in 2018 with “Into the Spider-Verse,” and continued with the equally successful “Across the Spider-Verse.” Greeted with great enthusiasm by audiences and critics for their exceptional visual impact, which combines the comic book style with the best technology offered by the world of animation, the titles have also impressed with their spot-on writing choices: based on the multiverse device, different space-time lines intertwine to unite the various types of Spider-Man in one great narrative.
The box office success of the first episode, which boasts over 370 million dollars globally, is joined by the even more positive response of the sequel, after having conquered the theaters with the astonishing sum of 690 million. Given the success of the previous episodes, the spasmodic anticipation of “Beyond the Spider-Verse” is increasingly felt; inheriting the arduous task of closing the trilogy with a chapter worthy of its predecessors. Faced with the enormous load of expectations from users, the development of the title had to face several problems; initially scheduled for March of this year, Sony Pictures therefore preferred to postpone the release to 2027.
The decision concerns not only the commitments due to the simultaneous development of “Spider-Man 4”, but above all Sony’s desire to proceed with a complete revision of the project, keeping the good things done so far and discarding the less convincing parts. In addition to this, it was decided to give the creatives more time, to avoid any overloads and put them in a position to work at their best. Further updates on the status of the project arrived a few days ago from one of the main interpreters. Interviewed during the presentation of the film “Unstoppable” on Prime Video, the actor Jharrel Jerome, active in the role of the protagonist Miles G. Morales in “Across the “Spider-Verse”, admits that he has not yet started recording the character’s voices.
Eager to get started, but still not knowing what to expect, he said: “I haven’t started working on it yet, but I can’t really say much more than that because, you know, it’s such a tight ship. I don’t know much about it. I’m as in the dark as everyone else, but I can’t wait to get back on the scene and see what they’re thinking, especially about my character. That was a really cool twist in the last episode.”
Just before the usual Christmas holidays, Sony has decided to make fans happy by officially announcing the names of the directors who will work on the title: leading the shooting we will find Bob Persichetti and Justin K. Thompson, two filmmakers with great experience in the Marvel Universe, known for having contributed in the past to the direction of previous animated films. Releasing a public statement, the filmmakers wanted to share the following message: "We have had the immense privilege of being a part of Miles' journey from the very beginning and directing the conclusion of his story is incredibly exciting. The creativity and care that has been poured into every minute of this project has been truly inspiring. We have outlined what we think will be a truly satisfying epilogue and we can't wait for fans to live that experience, we will give it our all!" With no less enthusiasm, the press release was joined by the comment of the film's screenwriters and producers Phil Lord and Chris Miller: "Bob and Justin's fingerprints are woven into the DNA of these films, and their passion for Miles' journey shines through every frame of his latest adventure. There is nothing more rewarding than collaborating with creative partners with a bold vision and brilliant execution like Bob and Justin. We are thrilled to work with them again to create a beautiful and satisfying conclusion to this story."
