The funding from the Territorial Cohesion Agency amounts to 12 million euros in order to recover the premises of the former technical office of the large Serbariu mine in Carbonia . The project is aimed at creating, at the Sotacarbo Research Center, an advanced laboratory of international significance for the production of hydrogen and other renewable energy fuels. Plan presented by Sotacarbo, leader of a partnership that includes the Municipality of Carbonia, Crs4, Imi Remosa, the Universities of Cagliari, Sassari and Campania "Luigi Vanvitelli", and which was third among the 27 projects financed by the Agency, out of 146 admitted to the final evaluation of the call for proposals for the creation of innovation ecosystems in the South. The only one for Sardinia.

The island therefore "becomes a point of reference for the entire western Mediterranean basin, an area with the greatest potential for growth in demand for hydrogen, thanks also to the considerable margins of development of renewable energy sources", underlines the president of the Region Christian Solinas . "We will contribute to the design of the micro-network for the management of hydrogen storage aimed at the energy self-sufficiency of the building involved in the project", adds the sole director of Crs4 Giacomo Cao. For the president of Sotacarbo, Mario Porcu, "the project is the first contribution to making Sardinia a region characterized by zero-emission energy systems, essential for the island's energy transition". The mayor of Carbonia, Pietro Morittu, also expressed satisfaction with the outcome of the loan.
