With the record price of Pecorino Romano PDO at 10.60 euros per kilo, Sardinian sheep's milk could reach over 1.45 euros per liter, if we were to take the famous grill, set up two years ago, as an example " .

This was supported by the Agricultural Studies Center (CSA), which focuses attention on the situation of sheep's milk production, the price of pecorino romano DOP and the qualitative / quantitative productions for the current season.

"A sector that, it is good not to forget - says the president of the CSA Tore Piana - in Sardinia represents 18,587 companies and a patrimony of 3,347,690 sheep and goats (3,058,122 sheep and 289,568 goats, BDN data as of 31.12.2021) and which particularly involves the inland areas of the island, that is, those at greatest risk of depopulation ".

Looking at the data of the first months of production, according to CSA, the liters of milk destined for the production of Pecorino Romano PDO are increasing. "To the positive notes, however, we must add a 15% decrease in total production in liters of milk. Compared to the previous year, this year no more than 265 million liters of milk will be produced (CSA projections) compared to 303 million. last season (Clal data) ".

The decrease is due to "the lack of pastures, the increase in feed costs and an unusual fact: many shepherds are milking their flocks only once a day rather than twice a day as usual".

The increase in the prices of feed, fertilizers, agricultural diesel and the electricity necessary for the operation of the milking and refrigeration systems, increases that - explains Tore Piana - "definitely erode the favorable situation of the Pecorino sale price. Romano, where at the barn it affects 30% of the price per liter of milk (0.43 euros per liter, projections from the CSA), bringing the margin back to 1.02 euros per liter of milk at the barn ".
