Seven degrees achieved in 17 years. This is the goal achieved by Gennaro Cortese, a 72-year-old pensioner of Calabrian origin and former teacher in Sardinia, in Porto Torres.

The last laurel - in Social Service and Social Policies - he received at the University of Messina, at the department of Cognitive, Psychological, Pedagogical and Cultural Studies Department, with a thesis on "The value of lack: growing up without a father in adolescence", dedicating the work to his father Lorenzo, who died when he was 14 years old.

Former Telecom manager of Reggio Calabria and journalist, Cortese has always had a pending account with the university, interrupted a few years after graduating as an industrial expert to go to work in a factory in Milan.

After his military service in Udine, Cortese dedicated himself to teaching school between Reggio Calabria and Sardinia, before returning to work in the national telecommunications company.

Shortly before retirement, the decision to take up the books and enroll at the University of Messina.

And, as mentioned, in the last 17 years he has graduated in Communication Sciences, Theory of Communication and Languages, Pedagogical Sciences, Cognitive Sciences, Philosophy and Sociology.

«With this last degree - says Cortese - I concluded my university career, dedicating it to my father. Before, I dedicated each of my degrees to a grandson so that even a trace of their grandfather could remain in the future. I hope to be an example and encouragement for all university students who abandon their studies at the first difficulty ».
