The Lega Calcio Serie A assembly has approved Giovanni Malagò as a candidate for the presidency of the Italian Football Federation (FIGC), ahead of the elections scheduled for June 22. Cagliari is also among the clubs that have supported the former CONI president, who—at the meeting that began this morning on Via Rosellini in Milan—received 18 out of 20 votes: Lazio and Verona were the only clubs that did not vote in his favor.
Malagò thus becomes one of the "strong" candidates to succeed Gabriele Gravina , who resigned following Italy's failure to qualify for the World Cup, the third consecutive and the second under him at the helm of the FIGC. Applications must be submitted no later than May 13th.
The Lega Calcio Serie A has an 18% share in the FIGC's elective assembly. Lega B is worth 6%, Lega Pro 12%. The AIC (Italian Footballers' Association) has a 20% share, while the AIAC (coaches) has 10%. The Lega Nazionale Dilettanti has the highest share, with 34%, and this afternoon its president, Giancarlo Abete (previously seen at the helm of the FIGC from 2007 to 2014), announced the challenge : "I will ask my Board of Directors to entrust me with this role, as Serie A did. I thought it would be more appropriate to take a different path from Malagò's, and I will ask for approval to make myself available."
