Good news for companies in the Sardinian wine sector. Sales data for Vermentino and Cannonau produced on the island are in fact growing sharply, with an average increase recorded in 2024 of around 10%.

This figure is even more significant if we take into account the overall 1.3% drop in sales at a national level in large-scale retail trade , which - with 753 million litres of wine and sparkling wine sold last year in Italian supermarkets and discount stores - remains the most important sales channel for the sector.

This is what is anticipated in the study “Circana for Vinitaly” , which will be officially presented on 7 April during Vinitaly , the traditional trade fair of the sector which takes place in Verona.

VERMENTINO – The study highlights how the best performance was that of Vermentino, which closed the year with a plus 11.7%, in third place in Italy for sales growth after the Sicilian Inzolia and the Primitivo di Puglia.

Not only that: in absolute terms, Vermentino also takes sixth place in the ranking with over 11 million 600 thousand liters sold.

CANNONAU – The “Circana for Vinitaly” study also highlights the good results obtained by Cannonau, with an 8.6% growth .

The research also highlighted how Vermentino and Cannonau are also first in the regional ranking. A result that is not a foregone conclusion, it is highlighted, because in other regions it is not necessarily the local wines that dominate: for example in Puglia Prosecco and Trebbiano surpass the local Nero di Troia and Primitivo. In Sardinia, however, there is no doubt: the best-selling wine is Vermentino, followed by Cannonau. Also on the podium are Lambrusco, then Prosecco and Trebbiano.

However, Sardinian wines are not present in the top five sales of other regions, with one exception: Vermentino is in fourth place in Lazio.

«In 2024 - explains Virgilio Romano, business insight director of Circana referring to the national picture - shoppers' choices have been directed towards fewer purchases and towards brands and types with a lower price to safeguard their spending budget, yet there are positive signs and we need to continue working on them».
