Easter with a plus sign for the Agnello di Sardegna PGI market: demand continues to grow with the Consorzio Contas focusing above all on local and European markets, in the face of uncertain forecasts on the trend of international markets.
«Sardinian branded sheep meat maintains a growth trend and confirms that the promotional actions implemented with the European project “AGnello di Sardegna PGI: buono, sano e garanzia” , co-financed within the European program for the promotion of agri-food products under the slogan “Enjoy, It's from Europe” have borne more than positive fruit», reads a note released by the Consortium.
"The local and European market and in particular the Spanish one - explains the director of Contas Alessandro Mazzette - have confirmed themselves as the main outlet in 2024 and this represents a reassurance within the difficult global framework that is being created. In a global context in which trade policies, including American duties, can influence exports, it becomes even more important to enhance the role of the European and national market for the products of Sardinian companies . Our Agnello di Sardegna PGI confirms itself as an excellence capable of satisfying a growing demand, thanks to a consumer who is increasingly attentive to quality, traceability and the guarantee of a genuine product".
"Europe and Italy - adds Battista Cualbu, president of Contas - represent fundamental outlets today, offering concrete opportunities that compensate for the challenges imposed by restrictions or duties on non-European markets . Investing in promotion on the European market not only protects our production, but enhances the added value of a product that has its roots in a centuries-old tradition, representing a stable point of reference for the entire sector". In fact, Sardinian branded sheep meat can count on strong numbers, and growing both in prices at origin and in wholesale prices. In 2024, the regional impact in Italy on certified meat was 56 million euros with Sardinia establishing itself as a national and European leader in the sheep meat sector . In particular, 2024 saw a significant increase in the production price, equal to 29.6% compared to 2023 with a redistribution of the added value towards agro-pastoral companies that benefited from fairer remuneration compared to previous years".
Exports of branded meat are also growing. "Therefore, international demand for Agnello di Sardegna PGI is growing," the Consortium emphasizes, "and this strengthens Italy's position in the global market for quality meat. In 2024, production reached a significant level, with a total of 732,428 lambs slaughtered, thanks to the Contas membership component, which stands at 4,951 member companies. Among these, female participation is 20%, a figure that reflects a significant presence of women in the sector."
"In 2024, the supply chain has proven to be a stable point of reference for the entire national sheep sector," Mazzette explains. "We know from the results obtained on the market, both nationally and internationally, that we reward the brand promotion and enhancement strategies we have adopted."
