In Sardinia, over 6,000 companies with 18,000 employees need water. The problem is not the scarcity of water resources, but the activities require interventions for new distribution networks and modernization of plants. The appeal comes from Maria Amelia Lai , president of Confartigianato Sardegna :   "We plan and plan with the PNNR: we avoid chasing any emergencies".

THE STUDIO - The Research Department of Confartigianato Imprese Sardegna has created a dossier on "hydro-demanding" activities. According to the regional analysis, which examined the perimeter of manufacturing activities and those of personal services, based on the 2022 ISTAT water use intensity indicator, there are 2,164 companies , of which 1,534 are artisans , active in the 10 "water intensive" manufacturing sectors that consume almost 32% of the island's water resources .

The top 10 with the highest intensity of water use are the extractive one with 21.7 liters used per euro of production sold, followed by textiles (20.9 liters per euro), petrochemicals (17.5 liters per euro), pharmaceuticals (14.1 liters per euro), rubber and plastics (12.4 liters per euro), glass ceramics, cement , and the like (11.2 liters per euro), paper (10.1 liters per euro) and products in metal (7.4 liters per euro). In these there are 9,534 employees, of which 3,735 are artisans. To these activities must be added the services to the person (laundries, hairdressers, beauticians, etc.) who in fact consume more water for business use than a family. In this perimeter there are other 4 thousand companies with 8,500 employees. Therefore, the total number of companies that work with large quantities of water are 6,164 for over 18 thousand employees.

"This is why we insist - concludes Lai - on the need for investments to reduce the dispersion of water resources due to poor infrastructure conditions. In Sardinia, as is well known, almost 50% of the water fed into the network (Istat 2020 data) equal to over 25 million cubic meters, it does not reach the Sardinians' taps ".
