Sardinian basketball mourns Tore Serra. The president of the regional basketball federation died at the Brotzu Hospital in Cagliari at the age of 71. Hospitalized since Thursday following an illness, he underwent surgery on Friday for an abdominal aneurysm, but his condition progressively worsened until his death.

One of the most important figures in the history of island basketball, a protagonist first as a player and then as a manager, has passed away.

Originally from Orosei, Serra moved to Cagliari as a child. At just 15, he made his debut in the top flight. With Brill Cagliari, he was among the architects of an unforgettable season, culminating in 1977 with qualification for the Scudetto Round.

In 1976, he turned down a proposal from Ignis Varese, then at the top of European basketball, choosing to stay in Sardinia. He also wore the Italian national team, winning bronze at the 1974 European Junior Championships and silver at the 1979 Military World Championships. He also played for Pordenone, Latina, Dinamo Sassari, and Esperia.

Deeply committed to youth development, in 1988 he founded Basket Su Planu, a club that has been active for nearly forty years in the Selargius neighborhood of the same name. A physical education teacher and vice principal of the Su Planu Comprehensive School, he combined his academic and sports commitments before assuming the presidency of the Sardinian Basketball Federation in 2021, a position he was reappointed in 2024.
