The EU Commission has given the green light to an Italian aid scheme of 475,000 euros to compensate operators of ground handling services at Sardinian airports for the damages suffered due to the Covid pandemic between 1 March and 30 June 2020.

Due to the travel restrictions imposed by Italy and other countries to limit the spread of the virus, the Sardinian hubs have in fact suffered a sharp drop in air and passenger traffic , with consequent losses in turnover, highlights Brussels.

Public support will be provided in the form of direct grants . The scheme was approved under EU rules on state aid granted by member states to compensate specific businesses or sectors for damage directly caused by exceptional events such as Covid.
