"We can't talk about workplace accidents only when they happen; the issue must be at the center of the regional political agenda. We need to focus on prevention , training, and monitoring." This is the view of Fulvia Murru, general secretary of Uil Sardegna, recalling that October 11 marked the 76th World Day of Workplace Deaths. "Too often, accidents are remembered and discussed only on anniversaries or after an incident," she reiterates. "These are issues that should be addressed daily, given that workplace accidents, sometimes fatal, are reported almost daily."
And the figures released by INAIL for the first seven months of 2026 confirm what a true emergency it is . From January to June, there were 213,985 accidents, 4.71% more than in the same period in 2025. In Sardinia, 4,791 occurred compared to 4,567 last year. There were 342 accident victims nationwide, eight of which occurred in Sardinia, one more than last year. Commuting accidents, i.e., those recorded during the journey to and from work, are also increasing: nationwide, they reached 49,166 (8.81% more than in 2025), while in Sardinia they went from 676 last year to 746 in the first seven months of 2026.
"These are data that should give us pause," Murru emphasizes, "and serve as a warning to institutions, employers, and social partners. Workplace accidents are an emergency. As the UIL (Italian Workers' Confederation), with the " zero deaths at work " campaign, we promised to fight for zero workplace deaths. Unfortunately, despite awareness campaigns, appeals, and complaints, the situation has not improved." According to the union, "the logic of profit, not safety, continues to prevail," Murru denounces. "Politicians, employers' associations, and unions must engage in ongoing dialogue on the issue of accidents . Prevention activities, worker training, and inspections must be planned. Action must be taken against those who do not comply with the rules and companies that apply them must be rewarded. Only in this way can we guarantee the dignity and safety of workers."
