Work on the stretch of highway 195 devastated by Cyclone Harry has been confirmed to begin on June 8th. It's absolutely impossible to wait until the end of summer: the work, the Region writes in a statement, " is urgent because any adverse weather events could cause irreversible damage."
The Councillor for Public Works Antonio Piu has called several extraordinary meetings with Anas and the mayors of Capoterra, Sarroch, Teulada, Villa San Pietro Domus de Maria, Assemini and Cagliari to discuss the project to restore the section damaged by the January flood, in particular the section between km 5+500 and km 8+200.
"The work is necessary, urgent, and cannot be postponed," explains Councilor Piu. " The fact that its launch and implementation will involve part of the summer season, with all the associated implications, has enabled us to work with all parties involved to find every possible solution, given the priority of safety, to minimize disruption. Thanks to discussions between technicians from ANAS, the Department of Public Works, the Departments of Industry and Tourism, and the affected local authorities, after careful review, we have opted for an alternative solution shared with all the mayors."
The solution agreed upon at the table stipulates that "during the safety works, traffic flow towards Cagliari will remain unchanged, while traffic flow towards Capoterra-Pula will be directed along the new roundabout built by the Cagliari Port Authority at approximately km 5,280, to continue along the SP92, the Seconda Strada (formerly SP1), and the Dorsale Consortile di Macchiareddu, before rejoining the SS195 at km 8,900."
Preliminary work has been brought forward to Friday, June 5th, three days after the official start. Construction is scheduled for completion by the end of July. " In about 45 days, we'll restore passability and, above all, safety to a stretch of road that lies on a key artery ," Piu concludes.
