Tragedy between the bars of the Uta prison where this morning an inmate died after falling ill in his cell. But help arrived late. What hindered the intervention of the doctor on duty was the fire set by his roommate, which made it impossible for the officers to access the room.
The police therefore first had to put out the flames, rescuing the two men, including the prisoner who had felt ill. Transported on a stretcher to the infirmary, he died shortly afterwards following a second illness which proved fatal.
This was made known by the general secretary of the UilPa Penitentiary Police Michele Cireddu who adds: «What happened today is surreal! In fact, a prisoner prevented his roommate from being helped by causing a fire and the delay caused did not allow timely medical assistance. Even yesterday evening there were moments of high tension as we were told that in one section some inmates exploded gas canisters in the corridors of the sections".
«We can't go on like this – continues Cireddu –, working in such a situation is real hell. Going so far as to prevent rescue for a prisoner who was in urgent need of medical assistance is of a unique gravity, with timely intervention he could probably have been saved. In the Uta prison, serious events have now reached a more than alarming number, we have been repeating it for some time: the critical events that occur here are three times higher than the total of all the other institutions in the region and in proportion to the number of prisoners, it holds the sad record in all of Italy".
There is also concern about attendance, with an alarming percentage of overcrowding: "There are more than 150 inmates beyond the regulatory capacity and the staffing shortage of the Penitentiary Police has exceeded 100 units, significant data that continues to be ignored."
