The record temperatures currently hitting Sardinia aren't limited to the outside world. At the Le Vele shopping center in Quartucciu, dozens of workers have reportedly been forced to work in extremely difficult weather conditions for weeks due to a malfunctioning central air conditioning system.
UILTuCS Sardegna has reported the situation, describing it as unsustainable and calling for urgent intervention from the facility's management. "We had already formally reported the serious issues encountered on July 2nd, requesting the facility's prompt restoration and recalling the obligations set forth in the workplace health and safety regulations," explains Marco Ferro of UILTuCS Sardegna. "Having received no response, on July 14th we were forced to renew the request, highlighting how the exceptional heatwave had further aggravated an already critical situation."
According to the union, to date no communication has been received regarding the causes of the breakdown or the time required to restore service.
The reports collected describe a situation described as "extremely worrying" : in the shops connected to the centralized system and along the mall's galleries, temperatures reportedly reached levels that caused some customers to become ill during business hours . The situation is different, however, for businesses with independent systems, which are able to guarantee more acceptable environmental conditions.
