Truncu Reale, firefighters at work to extinguish the last outbreaks. The mayor: "No toxic clouds"

The work of the fire brigade teams of the Sassari Command continued throughout the night to tame the last active outbreaks in Truncu Reale , where a fire of immense proportions broke out at Gesam Srl , a waste sorting plant.

Already from the first light of dawn the situation appeared to be clearly improving , with the abatement of most of the fumes, now present only inside the buildings.

The shutdown and cooling operations will continue throughout the day.

On the case, the Public Prosecutor of Sassari has opened an investigation for aggravated arson.

Over forty hours of fire with temperatures exceeding eight hundred degrees generated a column of smoke that has been visible in the skies of the Sassari industrial area for two days. Considerable damage and serious environmental consequences are calculated, evaluations that will be at the center of the meeting in the coming days in the Prefecture between the mayor, Nanni Campus, the provincial fire brigade commander, Gianfrancesco Monopoli, the provincial commander of the Corps Inspectorate forestry and environmental surveillance Giancarlo Muntoni and the experts of Arpa, the regional agency for the environment.

Of the three Gesam warehouses , only one would have been saved , although the heat could have caused internal structural damage. The vast fire collapsed the roof of one of the largest deposits and compromised a second one, structures that contained the processing plants for the storage of plastic, paper and cardboard, tons of urban and industrial waste that went up in smoke.

"NO TOXIC CLOUD" - "There is currently no real and immediate risk to people's health, no toxic cloud and there has been no case of intoxication even in the immediate vicinity of the plant". Thus the mayor of Sassari, Nanni Campus , who this morning carried out an inspection in the Gesam plant, in Truncu Reale, to take stock of the maxi stake.

"On the other hand, there remains concern about the possible fallout of dioxin on land and crops - the mayor continues -. Therefore it will be necessary to have the data of the ARPAS, which will be able to both evaluate the amount of dioxin in the area and trace the perimeter of the affected area ".

The mayor of Sassari, who was accompanied by the municipal technicians and the commander of the Local Police, Gianni Serra, also took stock of the extinguishing of the outbreaks that have held the city and the hinterland municipalities in suspense for two days. "The fire is almost completely extinguished - he explains - and there are very few active outbreaks. Unfortunately the plant was completely destroyed".

The city of Sassari confers in the center of Tergu, and therefore will not be affected by the problem. But many communities in northern Sardinia will instead have to find alternative solutions for the delivery of waste.
