A peaceful day at the beach turned into tragedy.

A 52-year-old Belgian tourist died while snorkeling in the waters off Maragnani beach in Valledoria , on the border with Castelsardo . It happened yesterday afternoon around 4:30 PM , when the man decided to go for a dip using a scuba mask.

The tourist was with his family when he entered the water and became ill. Some swimmers, who saw him lying face down in the water, immediately rushed to his aid and dragged him to shore. Emergency medical personnel were also on the scene and repeatedly attempted to revive him, but all attempts were unsuccessful.

Nothing could be done for the 52-year-old who died of cardiac arrest. The Coast Guard from the port of Porto Torres and the Carabinieri from the Castelsardo station were also at the scene of the tragedy.
