The man who died while bathing on Speranza beach in Villanova Monteleone was called Luigi Meloni and was 87 years old.

It was around 9:30 a.m. when the elderly man, originally from Alghero, had just entered the water when, due to a sudden illness, he began struggling and lost consciousness. Swimmers, seeing him in distress, alerted 118. Paramedics attempted to revive him, but the doctor's efforts were unsuccessful, and he was forced to give up and pronounce him dead.

The man died in front of his family and the many swimmers present on the beach.

The heatwave currently hitting Sardinia in particular has caused a dramatic toll, with elderly and vulnerable people suffering sudden illnesses while swimming or about to enter the water.

Two 78-year-old men, both originally from Ossi, died within a few days of each other due to the extreme temperatures of recent days.
