Omar Barranca didn't make it. The young knight from Borore passed away during the night at the Nuoro hospital, where doctors attempted to revive him with every means possible. The feast of San Lussorio thus ended in tragedy.

Barranca, 25, was admitted to the San Francesco emergency room last night in serious condition after being thrown from his horse. The young man, along with other local horsemen, after accompanying the statue of the saint in procession, wanted to traditionally conclude the celebration with a race at the Busala municipal riding track, at the entrance to the town.

For reasons yet to be ascertained, he was thrown from his saddle and his horse ran over him, striking him on the head and chest with its hooves. Initial speculation suggests the young man may have felt ill while in the saddle, which is why he fell.

The tragedy unfolded in front of hundreds of people. The young man was immediately rescued, but showed no signs of life.

He was immediately admitted to the emergency room in Nuoro, where he died during the night.

"Omar didn't make it," said Mayor Tore Ghisu. "It's a tremendous blow to his family and the entire community."

The Nuoro Public Prosecutor's Office has opened an investigation against unknown persons, necessary for an autopsy that could provide some answers to this tragedy that has shocked the town of Marghine. All events related to the festival have been canceled, only Mass will be celebrated.
