He was playing in the sand at Poetto Beach in Cagliari when, raising his hands, he noticed a small needle stuck in one of his fingers. The four-year-old boy attracted the attention of two other children, who also pricked themselves while handling the needle. The result: all were taken to the Brotzu pediatric emergency room for tests.

It happened a few days ago. The little boy's mother recounted the ordeal, just days after a similar incident in Monte Urpinu Park . "The children pricked themselves with a needle belonging to a medical device for subcutaneous injections ," the woman explains, "probably used for insulin or other medications, which had been left in the sand. We also reported the incident to the Carabinieri in the area, showing them the needle."

What struck the young mother was "the lack of awareness of the risks associated with accidental needle sticks with potentially contaminated needles. We had to explain to other parents the importance of going to the hospital promptly for the necessary tests."
