Important discovery in Loiri Porto San Paolo , where a diver found on the seabed off the coast an extremely rare Roman amphora of the "Almagro 51/c" type, produced on the coasts of the Iberian peninsula between the 2nd and 5th centuries AD.

The precious find was handed over for safekeeping and subsequent conservation work to the Operations Centre of the Superintendency of Archaeology, Fine Arts and Landscape of Sassari and Nuoro.

The discovery was managed by the Carabinieri of the Olbia Territorial Unit, in close coordination with the military of the Cultural Heritage Protection Command of Cagliari.

The amphora discovered was used to transport garum , the fish sauce that was the most common condiment in Roman cuisine. It is an uncommon artefact in Sardinia, where only a few examples have been recorded.
