Six hundred years of Pula's history are condensed into that small space, today populated only by seabirds. The island of San Macario, which dominates the bay of Nora, passes into the hands of the Municipality: after having received on free loan the small extension which houses a sixteenth-century coastal tower, the remains of a small church and a Byzantine hermitage, and the remains of a tuna fishery, the Cabasino administration is ready to launch a valorization plan.
A treasure chest, which could give further prestige to an area like that of Nora where the small church of Sant'Efisio, the archaeological park, the lagoon and the military fort coexist Boggio Battery: having obtained the concession from the Region, the next step will be to find the resources to give a new life to the island of San Macario.
The mayor, Walter Cabasino, is satisfied with the agreement signed with the Region, and already sees the islet as a tourist attraction: «It is incredible how so many treasures are concentrated in an island of that size, that small piece of land it is also a crossroads for migratory avifauna, and is also important because here - after the prickly pear eradication project, carried out by a French foundation with the collaboration of the University of Cagliari - brassica insularis has started to grow spontaneously again, herbaceous plant also called Sardinian cabbage. The islet of San Macario, in addition to having hosted a tuna fishery, a church and a hermitage of the Vittorini friars, was also a place used as a quarantine by ships that landed on this coast: here, there are centuries of history to tell. The Pula Cultura Diffuse Foundation will manage this heritage which we want to make usable soon."
