Sardinia continues to lose inhabitants and depopulation affects especially the internal areas . The number of residents is close to 1 million 563 thousand inhabitants, compared to the end of 2022: it means 1 percent less, as if a town like Villacidro had disappeared from one year to the next.

The "donut" effect is inevitable near the coast. The minus sign precedes Sassari (0.7 percent) and Cagliari city (0.5 percent).

From the regional capital, the population flees to the benefit of the hinterland centers, but not necessarily those closer. For example, Quartu , once among the most sought after also for the quality-price ratio of the residences, now, instead, very similar to that of the city. The result is that by 2030 it could be surpassed in number of inhabitants by Olbia , which instead offers services and good investment opportunities.

Capoterra, with its 23,149 residents, is the only municipality in the Cagliari area to have a plus sign.

In Gallura , Arzachena is the second largest municipality in Gallura, behind Olbia, with 13,915 residents .

Then there is an Openpolis statistic on Sulcis Iglesiente that makes you think. In Carbonia there are 3.3 elderly people for every young resident. Among the provincial capitals, it is the one with the highest old age index in 2021: 330.8 elderly people for every 100 children. The Sardinian cities stand out in the ranking. In second place is Cagliari, where the ratio exceeds 300 elderly people for every 100 children under 14. Above 275 over 65s for every 100 young people is also Oristano.
