The Santissima Trinità di Cagliari reopens to Covid patients. For the moment, only one ward will be set up, the current geriatrics, a set of beds that will be added to that of the Binaghi, the garrison that last spring replaced the Is Mirrionis hospital in assisting Covid patients.

"We had hoped that this need would not reappear, but the problem is that infections are increasing and consequently hospitalizations", Sergio Marracini, medical director of the single hospital unit spreads his arms. "It means that in the next few days, in the weeks to come, the situation may require us to be ready." Already yesterday evening a wing of the geriatrics ward was opened for positive obstetrics patients.

The leap of the virus

The rise of the number is beginning to take root also in Sardinia and will gradually drag an increasing number of Covid patients, mainly unvaccinated and fragile immunized, to the hospital. After the jump on Wednesday (250 positives and twenty-one hospitalizations in the medical area in a single day), yesterday the bulletin recorded 294 cases and another 9 patients ended up in hospital.

In total, on the island there are 7 inpatients in intensive care (one less), 118 in the medical area, while there are 3,506 people in home isolation (162 more) and there are no victims.

Beds occupied

At Binaghi there are a total of 90 beds available in the medical area and 11 in intensive care. Yesterday there were 75 inpatients, six of whom (all unvaccinated) in intensive care. The unvaccinated are always the majority even in the medical area: excluding the 9 patients whose data are not available, the Covid without even a dose are 42 out of 60 inpatients. Therefore, considering intensive care and the medical area, out of 66 patients whose data are available, 48 are unvaccinated, more than 72%.

"Patients are arriving from all over Sardinia", Dr. Marracini points out. "Unfortunately there are still many people who have not understood the importance of vaccination." 190,000 on the island, over 6 million throughout Italy.

Long hospital stays

"Not only does the vaccine protect against severe symptoms of Covid, but it also gives hospitals a way to better manage any hospitalizations. The vaccinated patients - he explains - we manage to discharge them quickly, within three or four days. The others, on the other hand, remain hospitalized for up to two weeks ».

The revised plan

Just a few days ago, Dr. Sergio Marracini was still optimistic. "For the moment - he said - no revolution of the plan is planned: Binaghi remains the reference Covid hospital". In truth, he had also crossed his fingers: "We remain optimistic, in the hope of not having to change our mind." We had to change our minds. Ambulances arriving at Binaghi from all over Sardinia are not a good sign.
