He was locked up in the penal colony of Isili because he was deemed dangerous due to his mental problems, but he left the facility only to end up first in a hospital bed following, according to his family, an assault and then in a prison cell.
This is the story of Alessandro Atzeni, 49 years old, currently locked up in the Uta penitentiary. His sister has turned to a lawyer, Armida Decina, to ask that full light be shed on what happened to her brother and to ask that he be moved as soon as possible to a rehabilitation facility suitable for his health conditions.
Atzeni was apparently the victim of an accident or - his sister Arianna says in a letter - of an assault inside the penal colony of Isili on July 4th.
"Upon his discharge from the hospital, doctors prescribed intensive neuromotor rehabilitation," his sister wrote. "However, instead of being transferred to a specialized rehabilitation facility, my brother was taken to a prison infirmary, a facility inadequate to provide the care required for his recovery. Due to the trauma he suffered, my brother now suffers from hemiparesis, which prevents him from walking."
At the same time, a complaint was filed for what happened in the penal colony of Isili: according to the version provided by the detention facility, the prisoner injured himself by falling, while according to his family, he was attacked. "The investigation is still ongoing," confirms the lawyer Armida Decina, " we have presented an urgent request to the supervisory magistrate to transfer Alessandro to a suitable facility, given that his health conditions are incompatible with detention in Uta." But at the moment no order has arrived.
The sister is ready to fight: "To draw attention to this serious violation of my brother's rights, I announce that, starting today, I will begin a hunger and thirst strike. This extreme decision is an appeal to the competent institutions to intervene promptly to ensure respect for his rights and the protection of his health."
