Old car and truck tires, car batteries, nets, pots and electric cables, and still tops and glass and plastic bottles . Overall, about a ton of waste was collected from the Azzena beach on the Stintino coast , on this day the scene of an important ecological event: "A Pesca di Rifiuti 2023".
The initiative, organized by the Asd Isula Fishing Club Sardegna in collaboration with various public and private partners , had the aim of raising awareness of the problem of waste at sea and promoting the collective commitment to protect the environment.
The event, supported by numerous organizations including the Municipality of Stintino, the Sardinia Foundation, the C4 Carbon company, the biologists of the Crama association, the Nieddittas company and the Italian Sport Fishing Federation, simulated a fishing competition underwater.
The real "trophy" to be collected was not fish, but waste scattered on the seabed. The competition began at 10 am, when the participants, equipped with gloves and bags, immersed themselves to collect as much waste as possible. At the end of the activities, at 12, the participants celebrated the end of the day with a group photo and a convivial lunch in Piazza Berlinguer.
"The event had all the characteristics of a non-competitive sporting event," said Federico Rais, founding member of the Asd Isula Fishing Club Sardinia and creator of the event. “The goal was to promote environmental protection. For this, at the end of the race, the athlete who collected the greatest number of waste was awarded with prizes offered by C4 Carbon; the athlete who received the most "particular and unusual" refusal; the participant who collected the most "harmful to the environment" waste; the youngest and the least young athlete».
The event saw the participation of numerous personalities, including the mayor of Stintino, Rita Vallebella, the city councilor for the environment, Enrico Scano, the biologists of Crama, Marco Bardi, president of the Pesca Sub Plastic Free association, and Donatella Carboni, professor at the University of Sassari. Maria Luisa Vallebella, representative of the Plastic Free Stintino association, who coordinated the ecological collection "on the ground" along Lungomare Colombo, the scout group Agesci Porto Torres, and the artist from Oristano Andrea Pala also took part in the event. The event saw the presence of important research and land management bodies. The North West Sardinia Flag, represented by the president Benedetto Sechi and Ispra, the Higher Institute for Environmental Protection and Research, represented by the biologist Claudio Sechi.
«A Pesca di Rifiuti is an example of how collective commitment can make a difference in the fight against marine pollution. We are grateful to all participants, partners and organizers for making this important day of environmental awareness possible», said Mayor Rita Vallebella.
