Emotions erupted in Settimo San Pietro for the funeral of Giuliano Ortu, the 50-year-old laborer and gardener who, along with 78-year-old Rodolfo Monaco, was killed in last Saturday's tragic road accident on the Nuova Orientale Sarda highway near Solanas.
In a packed church, the celebrant remembered Giuliano, "a good man, a hard worker, well-liked by all" and a collaborator of the parish oratory.
The priest invited everyone to pray and had words of comfort for the family at such a sad and difficult time.
The solemn service, accompanied by the parish choir, was also attended by Settimo's mayor, Gigi Puddu, and councilor Stefano Atzori, as well as many friends from Ortu, who wished to express their sympathy to the family.
Giuliano Ortu had left home very early last Saturday to go to Castiadas with Rodolfo Monaco to tidy up the garden of his friend's house. On the way back, tragedy struck at the 14th kilometer of the Orientale highway, when the Fiat 500 they were traveling in, driven by Monaco, was hit by a van headed for Villasimius.
Ortu died a few hours later in the hospital, while Monaco died at the scene of the accident, thwarting rescue efforts. The investigation into the incident has been entrusted to the Carabinieri of the Quartu Company.
