The non-invasive archaeological investigations of some sites in the municipal area of Siligo have started.

«These are investigations - specifies Marco Milanese , full professor of medieval archeology at the University of Sassari - which serve to build the identity card of an archaeological site without resorting to excavation . This is very useful because it returns, in this way, an identikit of the sites useful for better defining the archaeological heritage of a territory».

There will be three sites on which we will intervene: Santa Maria di Mesumundu, where we will try to better understand the progress of the Roman aqueduct, the castle of Capula, on Monte Sant'Antonio, and Sant'Ortolu. Of these last two sites, Professor Milanese specifies, «knowledge, from an archaeological point of view, is practically zero. On Monte Sant'Antonio there is also a Nuragic site, but the medieval part is unknown. Basically there should be the remains of this castle which is part of a series of castles in Northern Sardinia, the last to be built, for the war against the Catalan-Aragonese. We are in 1354. In Sant'Ortolu, which is located at the foot of the town, there are the remains of a church, San Bartolomeo, whose ruins seem to belong to a pre-Romanesque period. Again, we know nothing."

The idea, in Siligo, is also to dialogue and share everything with the local community. "The heritage belongs to the local community, we are cultural mediators who highlight, with a language that is understandable to all, the interest of things", added Milanese.

The students and doctoral students of the University of Sassari will take part in the archaeological investigations, which will last until 28 July. An archeology student from Sri Lanka will also take part.

«After several years of stopping these activities, the municipal administration has once again thought of starting the excavation campaign for the enhancement of the historical and cultural heritage of Siligo and has resumed the activity of the medieval archeology school with Professor Marco Milanese. We have 15 guys who will sleep in Siligo and go to different spots every morning. This will be the strong point of the cultural summer of Siligha», declared the mayor Giovanni Porcheddu.
