An online petition from Sestu, one of the most signed on the specialized website Change.org, titled "Teach life-saving maneuvers in schools," has already received nearly 25,000 signatures in just a few days.

The petition was signed by Cecilia Zairo, a woman from Sestu who, however, chose not to comment. Change.org spokesperson Samantha Costa, speaking for her, said: "The request is that education on how to deal with a health emergency be included as a school subject, starting in elementary school. For example, knowing how to perform the correct movements to clear the throat of an external agent. What to do in these cases, or simply that you should call the emergency number."

Right in Sestu, about ten days ago, little Lorenzo died after choking on a morsel.

The request then concerns not only the Heimlich maneuver, which helps those who are about to choke on food, but all basic first aid maneuvers, and more.

"Even how to behave in case of fire, or emergencies." And certainly, if a few more people in that Crans Montana club had known what to do, many things could have gone differently.

The courses, according to the petition, should start in primary school. "This way, such important knowledge is instilled in children's minds from a very young age," Costa continues. "Why are we waiting for mandatory courses on the job?
Why not teach in school what can save a classmate, a parent, a sibling? Panic can turn into education. Many lives could be saved if these notions were taught to everyone from childhood.

After the tragedy that killed little Lorenzo Corona in Sestu, choking on a morsel of food, the request seems more urgent than ever. But the ball on such an important issue is now in the State's court.

"It's an excellent initiative that I fully support. The city council will discuss a motion that goes in the same direction," said Mayor Paola Secci, "calling for the establishment of a school nurse. It was presented by the majority, but we are confident that the minority will also support and vote on it, as it is an important issue that is deeply felt by everyone."
