The government's decision last Saturday to reduce the excise duty discount from 10 to 5 euro cents per liter has led to a new wave of diesel price increases across the entire national network, with diesel prices returning to record highs.

Confirmation of the initial estimates is confirmed by Codacons , which today created a new mapping to understand the impact of the fiscal measure introduced by the executive.

The national average price of diesel in self-service mode once again exceeds 2 euros per litre on the ordinary network, with the most expensive regions currently being Calabria (2,030 euros/litre), Sardinia and Molise (2,025 euros/litre).

"However, if we look at the motorway network, the new wave of price increases generated by the reduction in the excise duty discount has pushed diesel price lists to very high levels, with the price of diesel in serviced mode exceeding the psychological threshold of 2.6 euros per litre in some stations," Codacons highlights.

According to the latest data published by Mimit and revised by the association, diesel fuel has reached €2.699 per liter on the A21 Turin-Piacenza motorway, slightly lower on the A11 and A12, where diesel fuel costs up to €2.631. On the A14 Bologna-Taranto motorway, the price reaches €2.579/liter, €2.559 on the A4 Brescia-Padua and A7 Milan-Serravalle motorways, €2.550 on the A3 Naples-Salerno motorway, €2.539 on the A15 Parma-La Spezia motorway, and €2.535 on the A1 Milan-Naples motorway.

"Reducing the diesel excise tax cut from 10 to 5 euro cents will cost Italian motorists 17.1 million euros a week in increased fuel costs alone, a figure that rises to 51.5 million euros a week when compared to the previous 20 euro cent cut," concludes Codacons.
