The trial for the alleged rigged contract at the Sassari University Hospital opened today in court in Sassari. The defendants are the former director of the AOU's ophthalmology clinic, Mario Cristoforo Sotgiu , and the Cagliari businessman Paolo Tronci , director of the AB Med company, accused of bid-rigging for a tender for medical supplies worth 2 million euros.
The evidence presented by prosecutor Lara Senatore and defense attorneys Guido Manca Bitti and Nicola Satta for Tronci, and Letizia Doppiu Anfossi and Gabriele Satta for Sotgiu, was admitted into the proceedings. The hearing was then adjourned until June 11th for the appointment of the court expert who will be responsible for transcribing the wiretaps.
According to the charges, the defendants, through fraudulent means, allegedly leaked the tender documents, committing the crime of "disturbing the freedom of the contractor selection process" , and thus favouring the awarding of 18 of the 21 lots of the contract to the companies represented by Paolo Tronci, namely Ab Med, of which he was director, and Promedical, of which he was de facto director.
As part of the same investigation, the Prosecutor's Office had requested the indictment of three other defendants, all of whom were acquitted by the preliminary hearing judge, who dismissed the case. A sixth defendant, Roberto Orrù, accused of aiding and abetting, was sentenced last February, under a summary trial, to 26 days.
