In Sardinia, 231 general practitioners will reach the retirement age of 70 by 2028. Furthermore, between 2019 and 2024 , the number of general practitioners on the island decreased by 40.3% compared to the national average of 14.1%.

This is the merciless snapshot of regional healthcare taken in the latest report from the Gimbe Foundation.

But these aren't the only critical issues highlighted in the data. In Sardinia, the average number of patients per physician stands out—negatively—at 1,384, compared to the national average of 1,383 (and in theory the limit should be 1,200). Furthermore, the island is reportedly short of 143 general practitioners.

A situation, it is reported, that is not expected to improve in the short term, given that in 2025 the participants in the national competition for the specific training course in general medicine were fewer than the places available : -3 candidates (-5%) compared to the funded scholarships (Italian average +26%).
