The only Italian among the numerous finalists, Sardegna Ricerche - selected for the "Innovation procurement initiative" category - was awarded in Brussels by a jury of experts who announced the winners yesterday afternoon.

Innovative procurement - a project created with ERDF funds 2014-2020 - is a strategic sector for Sardegna Ricerche as it contributes to modernizing the public sector with more efficient and economical solutions, facilitating access to the market for new operators, especially small and medium-sized enterprises and, at the same time, manage to provide technological responses to the needs of public administrations that cannot find solutions on the market.

From the commitment of Sardegna Ricerche were born: the intelligent street lamps wanted by the Municipality of Monserrato to improve traffic which, through sensors connected to the municipal police station, signal long queues or road accidents , allowing targeted intervention by the police forces. 'order; the smart barriers of the Municipality of Pula which has thus found the system to protect the Nora lagoon even in the event of floods or heavy rains, avoiding damage to the ecosystem and businesses in the area. Again with the support of Sardegna Ricerche, the University Hospital of Cagliari is creating a new tool for the early diagnosis of colorectal cancer ; Areus - Sardinia regional emergency emergency company - has successfully completed an innovation contract to guide emergency helicopters with new flight and landing assistance tools in adverse weather conditions and the Municipality of Fonni was able to create a prototype of a bin intelligent for separate waste collection that optimizes the collection procedure.

As Maria Assunta Serra , general director of Sardegna Ricerche , recalled, «our Agency has been committed for decades to promoting research and innovation with particular attention to small businesses. For this reason, we offer financing and support programs for innovation procurement launched by regional public administrations, in order to allow them to analyze and satisfy their technological needs. We help them address a demand for innovation to the market that was not previously contemplated, building a new “friendly” framework for innovation procurement. From this perspective, Sardegna Ricerche and the Sardinia Region have tried to combine the concept of innovation and the concept of public purchasing by helping regional local authorities, even small municipalities, in a non-centralized collaborative path", remarked Serra.

The award, presented yesterday by the Flemish Minister for Economy and Innovation Jo Brouns and the European Commissioner for Cohesion Elisa Ferreira, also includes a contribution of 75 thousand euros . The project for participation in EUIPA was carried out with the support of the Sardinia Region Office in Brussels.
