Coast Guard personnel have located the EPIRB of the fishing vessel "Luigino" that sank off the coast of Santa Maria Navarrese.

This is the emergency locator transmitter whose purpose is to signal the position of ships, aircraft and people in situations of serious emergency: it was 13 miles from the site of the sinking.

The Nemo helicopter and the Circomare di Arbatax patrol boat are operating on site.

The Coast Guard's resources have been at work since this morning: the search operations resumed after the weather conditions improved, which yesterday were terrible due to strong winds and waves.

A scenario similar to the one that caused the sinking of the Luigino, which occurred on Wednesday morning.

Enrico Piras

On board the vessel were the captain, Antonio Morlè, 53, and Enrico Piras, 63, who often helped out on board.

Antonio Morlè

Among them was Antonio Lovicario, 42, the sole survivor. When the fishing boat was hit by two large waves, perhaps due to a breakdown, the sailor managed to remove his clothes to keep the seawater from weighing him down. This enabled him to be rescued by the nearby fishing vessel Zeus, which intervened to provide first aid.

Morlè, however, sank with the Luigino. Piras managed to dive in, but his lifeless body was swept away by the force of the current.

The search was suspended at sunset. Patrols will be conducted tomorrow, but unfortunately, hopes of finding the bodies of the two shipwrecked people are slim.
