13 years and 4 months : this is the sentence handed down this morning in the Assize Court in Sassari against Alberto Picci , accused of the murder of his father Giuseppe .

The Court, presided over by Judge Massimo Zaniboni, also applied the sentence of 10 years and 8 months for the first crime of attempted murder .

On April 27, 2022, at 4 in the morning, the 50-year-old from Cagliari attacked his parents in the family home in Santa Maria Coghinas , hitting the pensioner in the mouth with the spear shaft and stabbing him in the cheek.

The accused also attacked his mother, Maria Giovanna Drago, causing deep wounds to her head.

Picci was sentenced to 12 years in 2022, in a summary trial, for the attempted murder of his family members but, in January 2023, the elderly man died in the hospital where he was hospitalized after the attack . A death that caused the start of another trial, this time with the murder charge formulated by the prosecutor Angelo Beccu and which had to ascertain the causal link between the wounds inflicted and the death.

The prosecutor had requested 24 years of imprisonment or 13 years and 4 months, taking into account the previous sentence. For the magistrate, the end of the pensioner is directly related to the serious injuries suffered that in fact transformed the eight months in hospital as a long agony.

Giuseppe Picci could no longer swallow independently, which caused continuous infections and pneumonia due to saliva stagnation.

Defense attorney Claudio Mastandrea asked for his client to be acquitted, deeming him incapable of understanding and willing .
