Some combat drones will also be produced in Sardinia. Rheinmetall, which controls RWM on the island, announced this on its website. RWM has two facilities in Sulcis, and was the subject of a crisis discussion at the Ministry of Mimit in recent weeks.

The announcement comes after the Sardinia Region recently decided to conduct a supplementary environmental impact assessment (EIA) for the expansion work already completed at the production site , which employs 350 workers and plans to hire an additional 250.

THE NOTE – "A few months ago, Rheinmetall completed a modern production facility for the assembly, testing, warhead production, and integration of Loitering (LM) munitions," reads a statement from the German company. Meanwhile, series production is proceeding at full speed. The facility is operated by the Italian subsidiary RWM Italia at the Musei and Domusnovas sites in Sardinia. Rheinmetall is collaborating with the manufacturer UVision Air Ltd. on this project. Part of the production line is located at the Rheinmetall plant in Musei, where the inert and electronic components are assembled and tested. The warheads are produced and integrated into the munitions at the Rheinmetall plant in Domusnovas."

DRONES – The current product range includes – as Rheinmetall always states – the Hero 30 drone (small and portable LM for infantry use), Hero 120 (medium-sized LM for precision strikes against armored vehicles and immobile installations) and Hero 400 (medium/long-range LM for precision strikes against fortified positions).

ORDERS OF €200 MILLION – "The current order backlog amounts to over €200 million for various Hero LM types to be delivered to eight different NATO and non-NATO countries in Europe," the statement concludes. Rheinmetall also has drones and loitering munitions in its portfolio. These include the Luna NG reconnaissance drone. With its unmanned aerial systems, produced among other locations in Penzberg, Rheinmetall generated sales of approximately €120 million in 2024. Rheinmetall also collaborates with other renowned companies in this business area, such as Lockheed Martin and Anduril."
