119 years after the tragic events that cost the lives of three citizens, Gonnesa commemorated the 1906 riots. On the steps of via Don Morosini, at the foot of the plaque commemorating the events, the mayor Pietro Cocco, representatives of the miners' union, the schools and the citizens gathered.
"It was not a simple protest but a real act of civil resistance paid at a high price, with the death of three of our fellow citizens - said the mayor of Gonnesa Pietro Cocco - in that period in our territory there was no shortage of popular revolts, for rights and social justice". In 1906 in Gonnesa the citizens took to the streets asking for more rights, to quell the revolt the police arrived and, in an attempt to disperse the crowd, killed three people.
"We must never stop fighting in the name of rights - said Gianmatteo Sabiu, delegate of Filctem Cgil at Carbosulcis - unfortunately even today there is no shortage of situations of denial of the most basic rights". Stefano Meletti, delegate of Femca Cisl at Carbosulcis, spoke about deaths at work. "One of the causes of the riots was the terrible working conditions - he said - unfortunately even today it happens that people lose their lives while doing their job". The ceremony ended with the blessing of a wreath of flowers by the parish priest Don Marco Olianas.
