"To you infamous people." Thus begins the latest post by the mother of Marco Mameli, killed two and a half months ago in Bari Sardo. "While knowing it, you have chosen to cover up the truth by pretending not to know anything. I say that you are making us even more cowardly, vile, miserable and cowardly. You are continuing to sink the blade into my son's body. But remember well that silence does not erase guilt and will not be able to hide the truth for long."
The pain has turned into anger. The words into stones. After 75 days of waiting, of appeals, of invitations, of sweetness, memories. After Easter and Mother's Day, the vase is full to the point of overflowing.
What is different about the murder of Marco Mameli?
First of all, the fact that someone certainly witnessed the crime, which took place during a Carnival party attended by thousands of people. It was preceded by an argument in a club in front of dozens of customers. And then. During the fatal brawl, a fellow countryman of Marco was injured and a boy immediately took responsibility for this episode by showing up at the police station accompanied by his lawyer. People, eyes, hands, witnesses, impressions, gossip. In theory, a mass of material that would make one think of a rapid conclusion to the investigation. Nothing could be more wrong. As if Marco had been killed in another space-time dimension, in which no one was able to see anything. The dimension of silence, made of darkness and fear. Pressure, threats, bad thoughts. The wait for a breakthrough in the investigation, spasmodic in the first days after the crime, slowly expanded, covering itself with a veil of resentment. As expected, the investigations never stopped, dozens of boys were interviewed, searches were carried out, phones were seized, images were acquired.
The crime is dated March 1. The first few days are crucial, the investigators' activity has been frenetic. A few days after the crime, the weapon used was found, a knife considered compatible with the wounds on the body of poor Marco, hit three times and killed by a stab to the heart. According to the autopsy results, without having had the opportunity to defend himself, as if someone was holding him down. The Prosecutor's Office has maintained absolute confidentiality on the investigations carried out, the results of the analyses and other tests.
In similar cases reported in the news, even those that occurred recently, such as the Monreale massacre, the contribution of those present who witnessed the scene was decisive. In the case of Marco's death this does not happen and once the emotional wave has faded the mechanism is destined to jam. For this reason Marco's family has never stopped asking for justice.
“Justice for Marco”. At the entrance to Ilbono, three words as heavy as stones welcome those who arrive in the town. In two and a half months, family members, friends and complete strangers are wondering why. The killer did not strike, hidden in the night, protected by a dry stone wall. Whoever killed Marco Mameli hides behind the fear of those who do not want to speak. There were many eyes, many hands, many thoughts that evening in Bari Sardo.
Tomorrow (May 16) in Pattada, the hometown of the murdered young man's girlfriend, Cristina Amadori, a torchlight procession organized by the parish of Santa Sabina and the Municipality will be held. Starting from the church of Carmelo, the promoters of the initiative want to remember Marco and express their dissent towards any form of violence. The bishop of Ozieri, Corrado Melis, will celebrate the 7:00 p.m. mass. The one in Pattada is the fourth torchlight procession, after Ilbono, Loceri and Bari Sardo , in memory of the young worker, killed with three stab wounds on the evening of March 1. On the sidelines of the procession in Bari Sardo, Marco's mother, Simona, said: "As Marco's family we felt wrapped in a sincere and heartfelt embrace".
In Ogliastra, there has never been such a mobilization, both physical and emotional, in relation to a crime. The reason is simple: a guilty party is needed. Not to come to terms with it, but to close the page and not have to live with the blanket of injustice on our shoulders.
