Quartu's rat emergency spreads: large rats also appear on Via Dante; residents are preparing a petition.
Rodent control interventions have so far proven ineffectiveThe rat crisis in Quartu continues. After residents on Via Boito, Via Leoncavallo, Via Mascagni, Via Boccherini, and surrounding streets are forced to stay indoors with their windows closed due to the presence of large rats, the exact same situation is now being experienced by residents on Via Dante, near the intersection with Via Diaz. Here too, an abandoned building, formerly a hostel, is fostering the rat population, providing the rodents with an ideal habitat.
"We're held hostage by rats and can't even leave our house," says resident Bruno Piras. "Our yard is now off-limits because they've colonized it: they climb on chairs and even walk on clotheslines. We don't know what to do anymore. We're collecting signatures to attach to a petition that we'll send to the relevant authorities, hoping something can be resolved."
Meanwhile, a technical inspection is scheduled for tomorrow morning in the area, a prelude to the next rodent control program. The problem is that here, as in the Santo Stefano area, the rodent control programs aren't having the desired effect: the mice have nested inside the former hostel, as well as on Via Boito in the building that housed the former nursery school, abandoned for years and reduced to a dunghill. Meanwhile, in the Santo Stefano area, the emergency hasn't been resolved, with mice continuing to roam through courtyards and even into homes.
