Work has been completed at the Quartu Sant'Elena municipal velodrome . The redevelopment of the Via San Francesco facility , featuring a concrete ring, banked curves, and a central parterre, has created a unique cycling facility for the island , capable of hosting national-level events.
The project, worth a total of approximately 1.5 million euros - including funds from the Pact for the Metropolitan City, the Autonomous Region of Sardinia and the Municipality of Quartu - involved the functional restoration of the track , built with cutting-edge materials selected in close collaboration with professional cycling experts, as well as the renovation of the stands , complete with specific stations dedicated to disabled spectators, as well as the restoration of the changing rooms and infirmary , also with specific services for disabled users.
Work is also underway on the parterre , the space inside the oval used by cyclists and clubs during competitive events to store bicycles and various equipment, and on the fence , already marked by time and recently further damaged by the elements.
"Track, grandstands, fencing, and stands. The velodrome's redesign is complete," commented Antonio Conti, Councilor for Public Works. "We will now publish the tender for the facility's management , open to companies and associations from across the country. It will be open to anyone wishing to use the facility to introduce new riders to the sport, especially young people, and therefore to train and practice, but also to host high-level sporting events, thus bringing Quartu into the spotlight far beyond the regional borders."
The management service will involve promoting, in collaboration with other associations, sports and/or recreational initiatives, guaranteeing discounted rates for young people under 18, over 65, and university students residing in Quartu Sant'Elena. It will also include opening and closing the facility, custodial and surveillance services during operating hours, cleaning of adjacent areas, and routine maintenance.
