Rather than an attempted theft, it looks like a full-blown act of vandalism.

Last night, someone, probably with a hammer, damaged the windows of the Vanity clothing store on Via Porcu in Quartu, almost opposite the Town Hall.

Not a single window of the four windows was spared, not even the front door. "We can't figure out what could have happened," says the father of business owner Salvatore Ferrara. "We only noticed the damaged windows when we arrived to open this morning. No one reported anything to us beforehand."

Ferrara also rules out an attempted theft: "It seems the intent was simply to smash the windows. But what's the point? Maybe it's just an act of vandalism, and we're leaving anyway. " The shop on Via Porcu has been shuttering since 2012: "It doesn't make sense to work here anymore. There's a crisis, too much crime, and then nothing is being done to revitalize this street where too many shops have closed."

Many residents stopped in front of the broken windows this morning to express their solidarity: "Walking downtown has become dangerous lately," they said, "the streets are at the mercy of groups of kids."
