There were moments of fear this morning in Quartu on Viale Marconi, where three cars collided in front of the raised pedestrian crossing near the clinic, just as a young man was crossing the street.

The exact circumstances of the accident are being investigated by the local police who responded to the scene. Initial reconstructions suggest that the driver of a small car stopped at the crosswalk to let a pedestrian cross, and the car following behind struck him . A third car was also struck, possibly moving aside to avoid the pedestrian, but the investigation is ongoing. The Sicurezza e Ambiente company also responded to clear debris from the road.

Fortunately, there were no injuries. However, the problem remains that crossing the street on Viale Marconi is a huge risk, pending a safety upgrade that has been overdue for years and is still nowhere to be seen. The final step in the process for the Viale Marconi upgrade is the Municipality's approval of a variation submitted by the Metropolitan City, which is supposed to allow the work to begin. This was supposed to be the final step before the upgrade, but there's still no sign of the workers. In addition to the roundabout at Via Maiorana, the project includes the construction of sidewalks, green spaces, and bike paths. Underground utilities will also be redone to prevent flooding near the Carrefour supermarket.

Via Fermi will become a one-way system from Viale Marconi to Via Segrè, eliminating the traffic lights. Pedestrians, who currently face enormous risks when crossing the street, will be able to travel more safely. The sidewalk will no longer be adjacent to the lane like the current one, but will be farther from the road, separated by a green area that will also border the bike path. Raised pedestrian crossings will also be introduced.
