Fear erupted on Via Irlanda in Quartu, where a large branch fell onto the central reservation at the intersection with Via Pitz'e Serra. The branches damaged a parked car, and only by chance was no one on that stretch of road at the time.
Gardeners are now working to determine what caused the enormous branch to fall from the tall tree. They will investigate whether the tree was affected by some disease that threatened its stability. The roadway has been closed while the branch is removed. They will obviously do everything they can to save the tree, avoiding the need for cutting, but simply thinning out the foliage. Some time ago, several trees were cut down on Via Marconi and replaced with small saplings that are still waiting to grow. The problem here was related to the longhorn beetle, a fearsome beetle that burrows into the wood, threatening the stability of the tree. It is also protected by the European Community and therefore cannot be eradicated. Further trees were cut down and replaced on Via Della Musica and Via S'Arrulloni because they were diseased and dangerous.
Since 2023, 286 tall trees have been planted in the city. Added to these are 1,840 shrubs and 20,000 seasonal flowers. Greenery has also arrived where it was previously absent, such as in Matteotti Park, where a new lawn has been laid out, while in other areas, existing greenery has been enhanced, such as Europa Park in Pitz'e Serra and Parodi Park in Sant'Andrea.
