The challenge is arduous, saving the ancient city of Nora from the erosion that threatens to submerge forever one of the most important archaeological sites on the island. To stop the destructive action of the sea, the Ministry of Infrastructure, the Region and the Municipality will implement a 14 million euro project that will allow action on the areas most threatened by erosion.

Elisabetta Loi, deputy mayor and councilor for Public Works, illustrates the projects discussed in recent days in the offices of the Department of the Environment: «The project of the Region , financed thanks to a contribution of 10 million euros, aims to build a wall not far from the shore, in order to protect the area of the spa from the action of the sea , there will be studies to evaluate whether that space between the barrier and the shoreline - where the remains of an early Christian basilica are located - will have to be covered. As for the area of the Roman forum, the ministry - which has already created the definitive project - will build barriers positioned underwater, piers that should absorb the action of the tides. The Municipality will also do its part, with our project we will complete the work of the Region and the ministry, intervening in risk areas such as the one located under the lighthouse tower».

The mayor, Walter Cabasino, explains how the protocol signed between the various bodies will allow them to better focus on the emergencies of Nora : «Each will have its own area of competence, in this way we will be able to better deal with the areas that are most threatened by coastal erosion. The goal is to distance the coastline and prevent the sea from definitively entering the archaeological park: we are sure that through the wall in the area of the eastern thermal baths, and the underwater piers in front of the Roman forum, we will be able to protect the immense historical and cultural heritage of Nora».

From the minority benches, Ilaria Collu, leader of Siamo Pula, explains how the defense of Nora is a mission that started a long time ago: « Coastal erosion is a problem that all municipal administrations have had to deal with , trying to limit the damage. Defending an immense archaeological heritage like that of Nora is a duty , I am happy that so much money is arriving that will allow us to intervene in the areas most exposed to the erosive action of the sea».
