Pietro Mastino, the carabiniere who tragically died this morning in a car accident on the provincial road 19 Olmedo-Alghero while he was going to start work in the Catalan city, was 55 years old and looking forward to retirement after a long career serving the citizens. Mastino, originally from Montresta, lived in Olmedo .
That short fifteen-minute journey he made every day to go to work this morning was fatal. Driving his Seat Ibiza, he collided head-on with a Fiat Panda . The impact was violent, the injuries were too serious, the man died before even reaching the hospital.
Numerous messages of condolence, starting from that of the regional secretariat of the Independent Carabinieri Union : "We learn with deep sadness that, in the early hours of this morning, a carabiniere died in a road accident that occurred on the road connecting Olmedo to Alghero. The deceased colleague was on his way to work at the Carabinieri Company Command in Alghero. The Independent Carabinieri Union of Sardinia expresses heartfelt condolences to the family and colleagues of the Department to which he belonged ."
A touching message from Salvatore Salis, mayor of Montresta , the victim's hometown: "In the face of a tragedy like the one that is affecting our community today, we can only remain astonished and dismayed. Another son of Montresta is gone. He is gone too young, betrayed by a cruel fate. A man of the Institutions is gone who, after a long career, looked serenely at his imminent retirement. But above all, he is gone, the son of a mother who, like all mothers in the world, would never have imagined accompanying him on his last journey. Aware that there is nothing that can ease their pain, we join Pietro Mastino's family in this terrible moment".
