Mosquitoes are already buzzing again, and the Municipality of Oristano is trying to get ahead of the game. Mayor Massimiliano Sanna has already signed the ordinance establishing preventive measures against the spread of West Nile Disease, Usutu virus, and other vector-borne diseases. This measure comes earlier than in previous years, just as the first insects have already made their appearance.
The action is based on a report from the Department of Hygiene and Health Prevention of the Local Health Authority (ASL) 5 of Oristano, which draws attention to the need for timely intervention to limit the proliferation of mosquitoes and reduce health risks.
The ordinance reminds us that pest control efforts in public areas are insufficient unless accompanied by proper behavior in private spaces as well. As the provision states, larval outbreaks "are frequently located in private areas," and therefore "citizen cooperation is essential for prevention."
The document therefore recommends avoiding any stagnant water: plant pots, bins, gutters, cisterns, or containers left outdoors can become ideal breeding grounds for mosquitoes. The requirements also include "keeping rainwater collection systems clean and free from obstructions" and adequately covering tanks and basins.
The ordinance's earlier implementation than in previous years confirms a now evident trend: mosquito season tends to start earlier and earlier. And this year, with the first insects already in circulation in early March, the problem is presenting itself much earlier.
