The Hygiene and Health Prevention Department of the Local Health Authority (ASL) 5 of Oristano has recorded a new positive case of West Nile virus.
The patient is a man in his seventies from Oristano, who was examined in the emergency room of San Martino Hospital and subsequently discharged home with medication. An epidemiological investigation has already begun, and the infected individual's residential area has been cordoned off to allow for disinfection within 200 meters of his home.
To date, 39 symptomatic cases of West Nile virus have been confirmed in the province of Oristano since 2025, with four deaths. The latest death occurred yesterday: a 77-year-old former railway worker from Paulilatino (Oristano) died at Brotzu Hospital in Cagliari.
"Once again, we urge the public not to underestimate the risks associated with mosquito bites and to continue protecting themselves from this insect that transmits the West Nile virus, which is especially dangerous for the frail and elderly ," reiterates Maria Valentina Marras, director of the Health and Prevention Department of the Oristano Local Health Authority (ASL 5). "Therefore, avoiding standing water, where larvae proliferate, is essential: frequently empty pet bowls, saucers, and containers. It is also important when outdoors, especially at dusk, to cover your body, legs, and arms with light-colored clothing, use repellent spray, and put mosquito nets on doors and windows to keep your home safe."
