This is an important moment in the life of the world, not always clear, not always orderly, but the contribution our regions make to national life is indispensable in addressing all emergencies that arise."

"This summer on vacation, I took a few books with me to the mountains to read, some recent, others to reread," Mattarella later explained. "Among them, two by Grazia Deledda, 'The Old Man of the Mountain' and 'Reeds in the Wind.' I had read them as a young student, which meant many decades ago. I found the same emotions, the same impressions I had then, confirming the enduring modernity of Grazia Deledda's work."
