This morning, Justice Minister Carlo Nordio inaugurated the new detention unit for the special 41-bis regime at the "Ettore Scalas" prison in Uta. It was a brief, low-key visit, with no cameras or reporters.

"This is the first important milestone in the prison construction and renovation process, which combines inmate safety with humane punishment, even in the most rigorous conditions. Further interventions will soon follow, including in ordinary facilities, according to the program defined with the Special Commissioner," the Minister of Justice said during the ceremony.

The newly inaugurated facility is completely independent from the institute's other detention facilities. It is divided into 23 semi-sections, divided into 5 sections, for a total of 91 detention rooms.

The construction of the new pavilion, intended for the differentiated circuit, represents the completion of a program initiated in 2009, subsequently updated and developed through a series of infrastructural, technological and organizational interventions, aimed at adapting the structure to the standards required for managing the special 41bis regime.

The project – it is explained – has been constantly monitored by the General Directorate for Prisoners and Treatment, the Directorate responsible for prison construction, and the Mobile Operations Group.
