He had set sail from Oristano on his sailboat toward Portoscuso . But midway through the crossing, he was caught in bad weather, so much so that he was forced to send out an SOS.
An emergency occurred at sea in Nebida (Iglesias) this morning, where the Portoscuso Coast Guard coordinated a rescue operation triggered by a yachtsman's request for assistance. The vessel, while sailing along the southwestern coast of Sardinia, was hit by a sudden and marked deterioration in sea conditions . Strong gusts of wind and rough seas made the vessel unmanageable. Upon receiving the report, the Portoscuso Coast Guard Operations Room immediately activated the SAR system, ordering the vessel, which is under the command of the Carloforte Maritime District Office, to depart.
Once the crew reached the sailboat, they secured the yachtsman and transferred him to the rescue unit. They arrived at the commercial port of Portovesme , where an ambulance had been pre-alerted. After a medical check, the man was found to be in good health.
The commander of the Portoscuso Maritime District Office, Lieutenant Giulia Burchielli , renewed her invitation to all those intending to go out to sea to carefully plan their navigation, consulting weather and marine bulletins beforehand, checking the efficiency of the onboard safety equipment and adopting conduct marked by the utmost caution, especially in the presence of weather conditions susceptible to rapidly worsening.
