The burns he sustained in the fire on that fateful August 16th were extremely serious. Luigi Atzeni, 72, had been hospitalized in Sassari for a month, and yesterday his heart stopped beating. The burns he sustained while trying to defend the terrace of his home on Via Casteldoria in Monserrato had profoundly affected him.

"Our father," his children Roberta and Riccardo wrote with sorrow, "is leaving us with the void of his silent but unconditional love, his discreet and constant presence, and his rare kindness. He lived for us and his grandchildren, Alice and Andrea: his reason for living was his family, whom he loved above all else."

The fire

On the morning of August 16th, Luigi Atzeni was at home when a fire broke out on the terrace. "When he saw the flames and smoke, he ran upstairs in his slippers. He tried to put out the fire with water using a hose. He probably became ill from the smoke: the heat caused him very serious burns. A neighbor, Fabio Piccardi, saved him by carrying him away from the blaze. Otherwise, he would certainly have died instantly."

From that moment, the ordeal began. Luigi Atzeni was taken to the hospital in Sassari and admitted to intensive care, in the burns unit. Unfortunately, the terrible news of his death came yesterday morning.
